How do I Transfer or Share Files from and to a VPS?

The easiest and fastest way to transfer files from and to a VPS is through Dropbox.

What is Dropbox?
Dropbox is an online file storage facility, which also functions as a file sharing program. Dropbox acts as folder (as if a folder/directory/storage media in Windows) with another virtual folder (externally).

When you are moving (drag and drop) or copying files to the Dropbox folder, instantly, the external virtual folder will also be filled/be saved with the same files (synchronized).

So if supposed we install Dropbox in your desktop computer, and then also install another Dropbox in our VPS, then the folder content of the Dropbox folder in VPS will be exactly the same as the Dropbox folder in desktop computer. Easy isn’t it? Whatever we are planning to upload/transfer to the VPS, we just have to move it to the Dropbox folder in our desktop computer, or in return, if we want to back up files from the VPS, all you have to do is just to put the particular files in our Dropbox folder in our VPS.

Step-by-step Instructions on Uploading/Transferring Files to a VPS

  1. Make sure that the files which are being planned to be ‘placed’ in a VPS, have been well prepared in our laptop/PC/flash drive. By means, gathering them within one folder (for example, a folder named: C:MT4-backup). The latest release of MT4 (build 600 above) requires, at the moment, to make a duplicate of two folders. One is for the MT4 Program itself (C:Program FilesIronFx, for example) and the second folder is Data Folder (EA, Indicator, etc.). Thus, we have to open the MT4 program first to know where the exact data folder (second folder) located, by clicking File >> Open Data Folder.
  2. Run/double-click the file terminal.exe (in the specific MT4-backup) to test whether MT4 has been running well and make sure that all of our preferred settings (including the EA files) already exist.
  3. Zip/compress (using WinZip or WinRAR) the specific folders to become two files, as stated in the number 1 above (still in our laptop/computer).
  4. Using the Dropbox as the mediator, or can also be using an e-mail (as an attachment) to upload the particular compressed file. Login to Dropbox (surely don’t forget to ‘create account’ first in Dropbox), and then upload the file (which is still in our laptop/computer). Or, for a much easier way, just download and install Dropbox in our laptop.
  5. Open/login to the VPS, run the IE application, and type www.dropbox.com, >> login using the same e-mail/account (the one that is being used in our computer/laptop previously), and download the specific compressed file which we have uploaded as mentioned in No. 4 above.
  6. Extract/decompress the zip/rar file (in the VPS)
    • Extract the first file, the MT4 program at first (unzip to c:program files);
    • Continue with opening the MT4 program in VPS (by clicking terminal.exe) and click File >> Open Data Folder
    • Then extract the second file to the already opened data folder (from the last step);
    • Create a shortcut of terminal.exe on the desktop (or on any other easy-to-click location), and run the program by double-clicking it. (Notes: MT4 doesn’t require installation, by only running the terminal.exe, the metatrader will normally runs. Please also note the destination location of data folder on a file called origin.txt).

Additional Info (the shortcoming in installing Dropbox in a VPS):
By fact, each program, even the smallest one, requires a certain amount of system memory, for it to be running well. Dropbox is also a program. And, as there will be always a limitation of a VPS' memory capacity, the use of any programs (especially Dropbox) would surely slowly consume its memory resources, which ends up in a decreasing the VPS performance.

How to overcome this shortcoming?
Follow the above step-by-step instructions on Transferring Files to a VPS. Hereafter, on the VPS, we only have to open the web browser (IE, FireFox or others), login with the previously made username and password we have created in https://www.dropbox.com and directly download the files which we have uploaded earlier. Use DROPBOX as a facilitating media only. Easy right? Happy experimenting!!!

The Windows Remote Desktop Client can easily be configured to map your local drives, printers, COM ports, etc.. Instructions to setup these devices are included in our logon instructions. When properly setup, your computer's hard disk(s) will be displayed in the virtual server file explorer as maped drives. You can interact with these resources as any other disk. Remember that this is a file transfer between your computer and the virtual server, so the speed will be limited to your internet speed.
